Our Costa Rican Community Service exploration is an exciting combination of diverse adventure travel and stimulating cultural immersion in an unspoiled tropical paradise of pristine beaches, exotic wildlife and a rainbow of colorful flowers and birds. Earn sixty hours of community service while building a rural school in a cloud forest, teaching local school children English, and restoring nesting habitat for endangered sea turtles. Experience the beauty of this peaceful country by sea kayaking a palm-laden coastline, rafting a jungle river, and soaring through the forest on a zip line.
 Whitewater Raft the Pacuare River
Upon arriving in San Jose, we will be taught basic Spanish phrases and about local Tico customs. Our group then travels to the wild and scenic Pacuare River where we will spend the next two days rafting its world-class whitewater. With monkeys and colorful Tucans overhead, spectacular waterfalls around many bends, we’ll plunge through class III and IV rapids with our talented local guides.
Explore Arenal Volcano National Park
Next our group journeys to the Arenal Volcano National Park where we will spend several days experiencing the beauty and power of one of the world’s most active volcanoes. After completing spectacular hikes and float trips near the base of Arenal, we will relax in the thermal waters of Tabacon Hot Springs. Village Community Service Project
Our group will travel to the Savegre cloud forest where we’ll settle in with the local community. After meeting with our local hosts we will begin rolling up our sleeves to aid this small Costa Rican village. Over the next several days, our primary mission will be focused on improving and beautifying the local school and playground. There will also be opportunities to teach English to the local school children and of course play a few soccer games with them. As a reward for our hard work, we’ll all enjoy soaring high above the forest canopy on one of the best zip lines in all of Costa Rica. Our local village also happens to be situated in one of the world’s finest tropical bird habitats so we should see a wide variety of tropical birds such as macaws, parrots, and the elusive quetzel. Sea Kayak the Gulfo Dulce
Traveling to the southern portion of Costa Rica, we will begin our adventures on the Osa Peninsula by sea kayaking among the pristine waters of the Gulfo Dulce. Along our journey, we will witness amazing waterfalls, experience a tropical coastal paradise of monkeys, sloths and scarlet macaws, while sleeping on star-lit sandy beaches. Corcovado Sea Turtle Project
Our next three days, will be spent in nearby Corcovado National Park, which contains the last coastal rainforest in Central America. Under the direction of local park guides we will spend our time restoring the nesting habitat of endangered sea turtles while observing monkeys, sloths and a rainbow of colorful birds overhead.
Surf the Pacific Coast
We’ll conclude our Costa Rican adventure with a final few fun days surfing the coast of the Osa Peninsula. By the end of two days you’ll be standing on your board and riding with confidence along a palm lined coastline. Our final day in San Jose allows us time to shop for souvenirs and enjoy a Tico feast before we depart for home. Earn 60 Hours of Community Service
Each participant will earn 60 hours of community service on this adventure. In years past our groups have volunteered at local Costa Rican schools - teaching English to students, building playgrounds, and beautifying school grounds. We have also assisted with the construction of a house for a teacher on the school grounds, worked with a turtle conservation organization, provided beach restoration and constructed hiking trails in a wildlife preserve among other activities. Each year these activities will vary depending on the community's needs, but all of the service will be meaningful and necessary and Certificates of Service will be awarded at the conclusion of the trip. Please Note: Through our travel agency we offer discounted airfares from most North American cities to San José, Costa Rica. Students may also travel with our trip leaders to San José and back.
For students completing 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th grades, grouped according to age.
