 Navajo Reservation Community Service
Our introduction to the High Southwest begins at Albuquerque’s Pueblo Cultural Center where we learn about the customs and history of the Native Americans who inhabit the region. The next day, we’re off to Fort Defiance, near famous Shiprock where we’ll volunteer at a local elementary Navajo immersion school, help restore a traditional ceremonial sweat lodge, assist a local medicine woman and help renovate the house of a Navajo “Code Talker”. Discover the Hopi Pueblos
Taking a break from our service work, we’ll visit the nearby Hopi Pueblos perched high on colorful mesas. Here life goes on much like it did hundreds of years before. Visit Monument Valley and the Painted Desert
Next we’ll have an opportunity to explore on foot some of the colorful sites the High Southwest is known for and where countless films were made. We’ll explore the Painted Desert, travel through famous Monument Valley, hike among ancient Anasazi ruins and trek through the Slot Canyons of Escalante National Monument. Canyon de Chelly Community Service
Neither words nor pictures can describe the beauty of this soon to be National Park. As guests of the Navajo, we’ll be transported into the canyon where we’ll volunteer on a working farm. While assisting the Navajo, we’ll learn about their customs, visit ceremonial hogans and explore the ancient Anasazi cliff dwellings towering directly above us. Whitewater Raft the Animas River
We conclude our Southwest Service Adventure with a day of exciting whitewater rafting on the scenic Animas River which tumbles out of the snowy San Juan mountains to the north. Historic Santa Fe provides a perfect setting for our final banquet in the “Land of Enchantment”. Earn 60 Hours of Community ServiceEach participant will earn 60 hours of community service on this adventure. In years past our groups have volunteered at a Navajo immersion school, assisted with the building of a house for a Navajo "Code Talker", helped restore a medicine woman's home, and constructed a traditional sweat lodge for the community among other activities. Each year these activities will vary depending on the community's greatest needs, but all of the service will be meaningful and necessary and Certificates of Service will be awarded at the conclusion of the trip. For students completing 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th grades, grouped according to age.
